On Tuesday, we learned when to start a new paragraph. Writers start new paragraphs for the following reasons:
* new topic
* new time
* new place
* new speaker
* dramatic effect
Refer to Tuesday's handout to complete this assignment. You must follow all of the directions below to get full credit for this blog assignment.
DIRECTIONS:
1. Open up to the page you are currently reading in your reading workshop book.
2. Identify the name of the book and the author.
3. Type two paragraphs from your text.
4. Explain why the author decided to start a new paragraph at this point. (Hint: It should be one of the reasons listed above.)
The word malice means the desire to cause pain to some one.

The name of this book is, “Also Known As Harper”, the author is Ann Haywood Leal.
ReplyDeleteI looked over Hem’s head to where she’d pointed, and there stood the woman with the wheelchair. Her stocking cap was gone, and her wiry gray hair spun away from her head in tight swirls. The suit jacket she’d been wearing before was hanging from one of the handles of the wheelchair, and she rested her hand against the other handle, as if she was afraid of someone taking off with it.
She looked me dead in the eye, like she knew me, and motioned for me to come over.
I HAD HALFWAY decided I wasn’t going anywhere near that woman, but Hem was across the parking lot before I could even try to stop him. He chatted with the wheelchair lady like she was the supermarket checkout girl that used to give him sugar cookies.
“What you got in that wheelchair?” Hem pointed at the big side wheel with his toe.
The lady shrugged. “A little of this. And a little of that.”
• I think the author is attempting to do more than one of these things. Harper and Hem saw this lady at night, with things in her wheelchair. Harper is worried and scared. The wheelchair lady is staying in the same motel as they are. It’s not a nice place. Harper, Hem and their mother were evicted from their house.
• I think these paragraphs are for dramatic effect, introducing a new place, and new information.

She pushed on pushed on past the pleading beast, to the mail table.Nothing, just junk, bills,overdue bills, long-over-due bills, and a letter from a collection agency.Let them break her kneecaps. She tossed the mail in the conveniently situated wastepaper basket, and removed her shoes.
