This week, we launched our unit on modernized fairy tales. You have a choice between two blog entries this week. You only have to complete one blog entry.
Choice 1 Directions:
1. Interview an older family member about his or her experiences with fairy tales. Parents, aunts, uncles, or grandparents are great people to interview! You may want to ask some of the following sample questions; however, you can also come up with your own questions. NOTE: YOU NEED TO ASK AT LEAST 5 QUESTIONS.
* What are your experiences with fairy tales?
* Did you ever read them on your own or did someone read them to you?
* Are you more familiar with the Grimm fairy tales or other versions?
* What is your favorite fairy tale and why?
* Do you feel like kids today know a lot about fairy tales? Either way, why do you think that is?
2. Record responses after each question and submit the interview. For a sample interview, look in your writers notebook.
Choice 2 Directions:
1. Go to the following website: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/grimm/
2. After the introduction, click on "Tell me a story..." This will bring up a new window.
3. Choose a story to read/ listen to. (You can answer the questions, which will lead you to a story that you might be interested in, or you can choose your own story by clicking "Take the secret path to the list of stories." Do not choose Snow White, Briar Rose, Rapunzel, or Cinderella, since we will be using these in class.
4. Provide a 4-5 sentence summary of the fairy tale.
5. Provide a 4-5 sentence reaction to the fairy tale. What did you think of it? Have you heard this version before? If so, how does it compare with the story you are familiar with?
I read the fairy-tale Mother Holle. Mother Holle is all about a girl who has a stepmother and another sister. The girl has to spin the shuttle each and every day until her fingers bleed. One day, the shuttle feel in the well and the girl tried to retrive it but she couldn't. She told her stepmother who told her that she had to retrieve it. She went back to the well, feel in and lost her senses. She soon meets a lady named Mother Holle who says that the girl should stay and work for her. The girl becomes homesick and returns home. Her stepmother noticing that the girl as a reward received gold goes to Mother Holle to work for she wants gold as well. She soon becomes lazy and does not recive gold but a big kettle full of pitch emptied over her and the pitch stays attached to her for the rest of her life. I liked this story because I think that it shows that even if you do the same as some one else, you might not get exactly what that person got. I have never heard this story before. This story kind of reminds me of the second Disney version of Cinderella because the one stepsister tries to marry the prince but it doesn't turn out the way she hopes. So, I think that this fairy tale teaches a very important moral.
