Figurative Language
This week we're working on descriptive writing. We read Hello Ocean by Pam Munoz Ryan on Tuesday. We noticed that she uses similes, metaphors, and personification in her writing. We can use these in our writing as well!
Directions:
1. Identify the book and author of your reading workshop book.
2. Record 1-2 sentences in which the author uses similes, metaphors, or personification.
3. Identify whether the sentence(s) you recorded includes a simile, metaphor, or personification.
4. Record a sentence in which you use this SAME type of figurative language.

1. He reached for the little redwood sapling that had fallen on the road, its roots crying out to him.
2. Here a ship of wonder, such as their planet could only gape at, had descended and taken off again.
1. was personification
2. was a simile
The dog laughed as he listened to the joke the cat made.
I am reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling. My first sentence is They were muggles who hated and despised magic in any form, which meant that Harry was about as welcome in their house as dry rot. That sentence was a simile. An example in my writing It was as hot as a desert.

1."A message from the winds."
This is a personification because the winds really can't send a message. The type of winds they're talking about are wood winds, like, the saxophone.
2. The first letters of the smells spelled HELP!
This is another personification because smells can't talk. Also, the smells are:
Heliotrope
Echinacea
Licorice
Peanut butter
So this is how it spells HELP!!!
The book I'm reading is if your reading this it's too late by Pseudonymous Bosch.
ReplyDeleteThey said the plate was a plain, white plate with chocolate on it.They called it a pillow of gold.
Which is a metaphor.
Also the girl Simon said the chocolate tasted like her childhood, in the rain forest where her family's old cacao farm is. Which is a simile. I did so sweet so beautiful, like a flower you've been waiting for that beautiful little bud on a spring day. That's my simile I used in "when my brother Colin was born."
My metaphor is, the blanket was silky, like a woman's ball gown, and cozy like warm fleece pj's on a cold day.

1.The hat spoke with intelligence and wisdom.
2. Ron's face got as red as a tomato.
The first sentence was personification and the second sentence was a simile.
My simile is: The couch was as soft as cotton candy.
